Green Party US - Press Release
New York – Members of the Green Party of New York (GPNY) came out in full force to demand immediate and comprehensive action to address the planetary emergency of climate change at New York State Senate hearings held the week of February 10, 2019. Greens called for the elimination of new fossil fuel infrastructure, particularly the building of new gas pipelines and gas-fired power plants, and moving to a carbon-neutral, 100% clean, renewable energy economy by 2030. They emphasized the need for a just transition for workers and frontline communities most affected by climate change.
Philadelphia, PA – On January 23, two members of the Green Party of United States (GPUS) delivered an open letter and three other documents to Ambassador Inga Rhonda King, president of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UNESC). This open letter had been adopted by the GPUS National Committee, and it asked UNESC to listen to and talk with three speakers called by GPUS. At this audience, UNESC could have speakers with views opposing those of GPUS.
Why We Must Support a Real Green New Deal Before It's Too Late!
One of the most talked about policy changes currently taking place in Washington, D.C. and here in New Jersey is "The Green New Deal," a plank in the Green Party US and the Green Party of New Jersey (GPNJ's) platform for decades. GPNJ calls on Governor Murphy, state senators and assembly members, local officials and our entire New Jersey Congressional delegation to support a Real Green New Deal with enforcement mechanisms. According to the most recent report from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, we have only 12 years to prevent a total planetary disaster.
"The Green Party of Pennsylvania (GPPA) opposes any provisions in U.S. House Resolution 1 (H.R.1) that would work to vilify or weaken progressive voices, and we are against the proposed changes for the federal matching funds program," stated Jocolyn Bowser-Bostick, chair of the Delaware County Green Party and member of the GPPA Steering Committee.
The Green Party of the United States stands in opposition to the regime-change politics of the United States directed at the people of Venezuela and expresses condemnation of the recent blows to the Venezuelan economy in the form of the United States' handing over banking access and funds to the opposition led by Juan Guaidó and UK's blocking of access to gold belonging to Venezuela. This sentiment is long held by the Greens as our platform plank on foreign policy states: "In the area of trade, third- and fourth-world economies and resources are being ravaged and our own economy and job security undermined by global corporatization, which concentrates greater power in the hands of fewer interests who are unaccountable to the vast majority of the world's people."
The Green Party of the United States has championed the idea of a Green New Deal to address the climate crisis and wealth inequality for nearly a decade. Given the most recent report by the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change giving twelve years to address the crisis, we need bold solutions now, not compromise.
The Democrat's proposed Green New Deal fails to address one of the biggest drivers of the climate crisis: the use of fossil fuels as an energy source. It contains loop holes for their continued use without a set end date. The Green Party's plan for a Green New Deal would transition to 100% renewable energy by 2030.
The South Central Michigan Greens local will hold its monthly meeting 1:00 – 3:00 pm on Saturday, February 16 at the downtown Jackson Coffee Company (201 South Mechanic Street in Jackson).
Greens from Jackson, Hillsdale, and Calhoun Counties will discuss the #realDeal -- the original Green New Deal from the Green Party -- and what it can do for real people. Anyone else in the area who's interested is welcome to join in.
The Pacific Green Party of Oregon today called for a "Real Green New Deal" that addresses not only the climate crisis but also the corporate control of our government and economy.
While Democrat presidential candidates and Senators Jeff Merkley and Cory Booker, along with Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, this week announced their support for a Green New Deal, based on language and issues the Green Party has been promoting for almost twenty five years, the Democrats' version ignores the economic inequity and rampant corporatism at the heart of our current environmental crisis.
RICHMOND, VA - Since the previous State of the Union address, our country has continued to move in the wrong direction. In 2018, American carbon dioxide emissions increased by 3.4%, while fracked gas pipelines are threatening communities in Virginia, Maryland, Florida, North Dakota, South Dakota, Pennsylvania, and more. Hate crimes increased for the third straight year. Our military budget exploded once again, and our troops remain mired in overseas conflicts despite President Trump’s promises to bring some of them home.
The Green Party of New Jersey opposes the ongoing effort by the U.S. to appropriate the resources of Venezuela as their own and believes in the right of Venezuelans to determine their own leadership without outside the intervention of outside imperialistic forces. GPNJ is particularly concerned that these efforts not end in war with Venezuela which would be disastrous.
The Green Party of Pennsylvania (GPPA) has called for the U.S. to keep its hands off Venezuela. In response to a request from the Green Party local in Wayne County, the GPPA steering committee announced the Green Party's opposition to the current coup d'état attempt by Venezuela's Popular Will Party; the Green Party's continued support for the people of Venezuela and their democratically elected government; and the Green Party's desire to end all U.S. sanctions.
NEW YORK — The Green Party of New York denounced the ongoing US-backed coup in Venezuela as the latest in a long line of US imperial interventions in Latin America. Party officers pointed out that the Trump administration has been enforcing crippling sanctions on Venezuela and met with military leaders last year to plot a coup, which was openly reported in US news outlets. The US openly backed a coup in 2002 that temporarily deposed President Hugo Chavez, and the Bush, Obama, and Trump regimes have supported the right-wing opposition and its neoliberal plans for the Venezuelan economy. Party leaders said members of the New York Congressional delegation, including Senators Schumer and Gillibrand and Representative Ocasio-Cortez should introduce a resolution to cut off all US support for the coup.
High Springs, FL – "I stand in solidarity with the people of Venezuela!" says Robin Harris, co-chair of the Green Party of Florida, in response to the U.S. government's latest maneuvers to depose the democratically elected President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, and bring in a right-wing regime that would hand over that country's mineral wealth to the powerful oligarchs that are still a dangerous force in that country under siege.
"The Green Party of Florida rallies strongly against imperialism, capitalism and the fascist tactics that the U.S and Juan Guaidó have wielded against this country," Harris continues. "We also denounce Donald Trump's affirmation of Juan Guaidó, head of the U.S.-backed opposition, as president. It violates all democratic process and is a total violation of human rights."
To the Green Party of Mississippi, it's clear that the United States government has a long history of misleaders and interference in other countries around the world. The systems put in place - by parties and officials supported by big money in political campaigns – allow greedy people to get rich while millions lack a living wage, affordable housing and health care, good nutrition, and clean air and water.
(Denver, Colorado, January 23, 2019) - The Denver Green Party expresses solidarity and unwavering support for the members of the Denver Classroom Teachers Association (DCTA), who voted last night to strike. The vote passed with 93 percent of members in favor of the move, the first strike in Denver Public Schools (DPS) in 25 years. The earliest strike date would be January 28, 2019.
DCTA's demands are largely focused on Denver's pay-for-performance system, called ProComp, which has resulted in teacher salaries 14 percent lower than other large school districts in Colorado.
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a group of over 60 prominent American citizens called for a full investigation into Reverend King’s assassination.
"The Green Party of the United States Working Group on Reparations stands in solidarity with members of the King Family and advisors’ call for action to reopen the probe into the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.," said Trahern Crews, a member of the Working Group.
The Green Party of the United States stands in solidarity with the Los Angeles Teachers Union in their strike demands, including lowering class size and retaining/hiring essential support staff such as nurses, counselors, and librarians. We oppose education policies seeking to privatize public schools and bust unions and join with teachers to advocate for living wages for all workers. We support systemic change to strengthen labor and communities while ending the school-to-prison pipeline.
Delegates of the Green Party of Pennsylvania (GPPA) elected a new party co-chair, Alan Smith of Chester County, at their first meeting of the new year held on January 13. Smith will join current Co-Chair Sheri Miller of Adams County, to lead the Green Party in 2019.
Smith will bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to the Green Party leadership through extensive experience as a philosopher, educator, and peacemaker. As a long-distance runner, he also understands the value of patience, perseverance, persistence and pacing and uses these tools in all endeavors. Having taught students from kindergarten to university, Smith’s philosophy begins with the idea that we are all teachers and all learners.
The Green Party of New Jersey endorses the March on the Pentagon Peace Contingent at the Women’s March on Trenton
Trenton — Saturday, January 19, 2019 — The Green Party of New Jersey is proud to join members of The March on the Pentagon (formerly: The Women’s March on the Pentagon) to form a peace contingent at the Women’s March on Trenton. This peace contingent seeks to put the anti-war agenda back into political activism and confront the bi-partisan war machine.
Kensington, MD Jan 10, 2019 — Two Green Party activists were arrested on Wednesday in an act of civil disobedience at the Housing Opportunities Commission in Kensington, MD. The Housing Opportunities Commission (HOC) owns a parcel of land in Bethesda where a historic African American cemetery was covered over by a parking lot in the 1960s. The HOC, after initially agreeing to meet with the Cemetery Coalition and the Regency Centers Corporation that is planning the redevelopment of the Westbard area of Bethesda, abruptly backed out of their agreement and has refused any communication with the Coalition.
