This past weekend the Green Party of the United States proudly selected
former Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney to be our Presidential candidate
and Puerto Rican hip hop activist Rosa Clemente to be her Vice Presidential
running mate. Ms. McKinney in her acceptance speech pointed to this ticket
of two women, an African American and a Latina, as a tool for putting right
our American ship of state. With this ticket the Green Party has the opportunity
to once again address the issues that are of vital importance to our communities
which are being dealt with only in a sound bitecorporate focused manner
by the two dominant parties. Issues such as universal comprehensive single
payer health care, education reform that truly empowers and educates our
youth, environmentally sensitive and worker focused economic reforms, an
end to the death penalty and criminal justice reforms, humane meaningful
immigration reform, and an end to the war in the Middle East.
But perhaps most importantly we the Green Party has an opportunity to reach
out to new constituencies and broaden our diversity.
Here in Ohio we are facing a the daunting challenge of having to gather most of the 5000 signatures to get our candidates on the ballot so late in the game. We must present our petition signatures to the Ohio Secretary of States office no later than 4pm on August 21st. Anyone who wishes to gather signatures and needs copies of the petition should download the petition in pdf format.
Please note that our petitions were printed up with a stand-in
candidate, Robert Fitrakis,
because they were printed prior to Rosa Clemente being added to the ticket.
The Ohio
Green Party will have the VP candidate changed to Rosa Clemente and her
name will appear on the ballot of we get the necessary signatures.
Also since it is so late in the game and we want to make sure we get all
the petitions returned in time
volunteers will be collecting the petitions, so don't put your petitions
in the mail but contact Anita Rios to have them picked up.

In the words of Rosa Clemente, “We are not the alternative
we are the imperative!”, and although it will indeed be the greatest
challenge we have faced to accomplished this task it is imperative that
we succeed. And in the words of Cynthia McKinney, “We must do what
we have never done before, to have what we never had before.”
We will be announcing petitioning activities each week until our petitions
are submitted and are planning to bring the candidates to Ohio as soon as
we can make the arrangements and their schedules will permit. Be watching
for updates or contact Anita Rios for more information.

Saturday August 9.
Eight
campaign volunteers met in Athens on Fourth of July for the annual parade.
In between the raindrops we managed to pass out fliers and meet voters.
All in all a great day! Volunteers are needed for upcoming events. You can
volunteer at http://www.votekettler.com/13_volunteer.html.
Next up will be the Athens County Fair August 1-9. This will be an exciting
and important event. It’s time to start getting out yard signs and spreading
the word! On August 6, 6-8 pm I will be speaking in Athens to voters about
Health Care. The forum will be held at Christ the King University Parish,
75 Stewart Street, Athens. The public is invited. Details are forthcoming
for a television appearance on Athens local cable access TV. I have been
invited by the show’s host Bob Whealey to appear around fair week and will
post the details soon. The Ohio Education Assn. and the Ohio Civil Service
Employees Assn. have endorsed the Republican candidate in the race. The
Green Party has always supported organized labor and more importantly the
concept of collective bargaining. Unfortunately they are not immune to that
ever increasing propensity among voters of voting against their own self-interests.
