Ohio Green Party Condemns Half-Measures on Uranium and Climate as COP28 Falters
Columbus, OH – While the ink dries on a weak and insufficient agreement at COP28, the US House passes a bill that tinkers around the edges of dependence on Russian uranium, failing to address the root causes of climate disaster and energy insecurity. The Ohio Green Party condemns both the failed COP28 and the band-aid approach of the House bill, calling for a bold vision of energy independence and a just transition away from fossil fuels and nuclear power.
“The world is burning, and the leaders at COP28 fiddled while Rome – and countless other cities – simmered,” said Philena Farley, Co-chair of the Ohio Green Party. “Their tepid agreement is a betrayal of the millions pleading for action, and a clear sign that the current system is incapable of delivering the radical change needed to avert climate catastrophe.”
The House bill, while seemingly a step towards reducing dependence on Russian energy, ultimately falls short. The waivers embedded within the bill create a dangerous loophole, potentially allowing continued imports of Russian uranium and undermining the ban’s effectiveness. Moreover, it fails to address the fundamental issue – our reliance on nuclear and fossil fuel-based energy systems.
“Banning Russian uranium is a positive step, but it’s just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic,” declared Daryl Davis, Anti-Nuke Committee. “Nuclear power, with its inherent risks and radioactive waste legacy, is not a sustainable solution. We need to break free from the shackles of fossil fuels and nuclear dependence, and embrace a future powered by clean, renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and geothermal.”
The climate crisis demands more than half-measures and political gamesmanship. It demands bold action, visionary leadership, and a commitment to building a future powered by clean energy and social justice. The Ohio Green Party stands ready to work alongside all who share this vision, to push for the transformative change desperately needed to heal our planet and secure a livable future for generations to come.
