Ohio Green Party Condemns Harmful Spending Bill, Defense Spending Increases, and Nuclear Safety Rollbacks

Cleveland, OH – March 14, 2025 – The Ohio Green Party is deeply concerned about the implications of the recently passed spending bill, which the Democrats have failed to defeat on what was essentially a party-line vote and now looking at a short term funding extension until April 11th to negotiate bipartisan legislation. This bill poses significant threats to our nation’s well-being and security by prioritizing defense spending over essential domestic programs.

An Emerson College poll released this week, however, found voters held a less favorable view of the Democratic Party than they did the GOP. And Democrats have struggled so far this year with how best to respond to Trump and his actions since taking office.

“How serious are the Democrats about protecting the planet and its creatures, even the Republican critters, if they are going to let this go because it is too hard to stop it?”  said Daryl Davis of the Anti-Nuke Committee.

An additional $6 billion has been allocated to defense while non-defense spending is slashed by $13 billion. The bill prevents Congress from stopping Trump from imposing tariffs, creating slush funds for discretionary spending. Furthermore, $1.4 billion has been cut from the Army Corps of Engineers, jeopardizing infrastructure just before hurricane season. A $185 million cut from defense nuclear nonproliferation programs undermines global security. No additional funding has been allocated for FEMA, exacerbating the impact of natural disasters. Additionally, a $30 million reduction in broadband service for rural communities leaves areas like Huron County with inadequate internet access.

These cuts are misleadingly labeled as “savings” by Republicans, but they undermine essential services and public safety.

Daryl sat through the #NRCRIC2025 session on the legal impacts of the Advance Act during the NRC’s Annual Regulatory Information Conference (March 11th – 13th).  She stated, “The gist of the presentation was that lowering the safety standards for nuclear plants does not in any way reduce their safety. No kidding!” This type of thinking has influenced the spending bill, lowering safety standards for nuclear plants under the guise of cost-benefit analysis.

Gwen Marshall, Hamilton County Co-Chair, currently on a cruise, adds, “I am in the Bahamas right now and they are still upset with Musk dropping nuclear waste on them from his exploding failed rockets. The one last Thursday was visible from our ship and they can feel the explosions in Nassau. So far he has not killed anyone here but I am sure he won’t care if he does.”

The Ohio Green Party calls for immediate action to challenge this harmful spending bill and protect the interests of all Americans. We urge citizens to contact their representatives, participate in local protests, and spread awareness on social media. Together, we can advocate for a spending bill that prioritizes people over profits and ensures a sustainable and secure future.
