Ohio Green Party Stands In Support of Michigan Congresswoman Rashida Talib

It is shocking and deplorable that as we watch genocide in Gaza being carried out with our tax dollars, the response from our congress is to censure Michigan Congresswoman Rashida Talib, for calling for freedom for Palestinians. The Ohio Green Party commends Rashida Talib for her courage and for her understanding that all the peoples of the Middle East deserve freedom. Our country is supporting Israel as they kill thousands of children in Gaza, we continue to support them even in their use of white phosphorous on civilian populations, which Amnesty International has documented and labeled a war crime. But our cowardly congress can only respond by trying to silence the only Palestinian congress person. Even more shocking and deplorable are the 22 democrats, including Greg Landsman of Ohio, who joined republicans in voting in favor of censure.

Conflating the chant, “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”, with a call for the elimination of Israel is a cynical ploy to stir and exacerbate tensions. With 21% of the population of Israel being Arab, many of whom are Palestinian, all freedom loving people should support the goal of freedom for all, including Palestinians. We stand firmly in the belief that an enduring peace in the Middle East will only be achieved through the mutual respect of all parties towards one another, a Free Palestine is a part of the vision of a peaceful Middle East.

Our congress, by failing to speak for the innocents whose lives are being taken on a daily basis, has once again demonstrated that our political institutions are devoid of honor. In addition, our corporate media including National Public Radio is failing to provide honest and balanced coverage of the violence in the Middle East. While it is impossible to not show the destruction of Gaza, those images are invariably subsumed with an emphasis on the Hamas attacks of Oct.7. Mass murder does not justify more and greater mass murder.

The Ohio Green Party stands with Rashida Talib in her call for freedom for Palestinians, and understands that this call does not undermine the freedom of any other groups of people. Freedom for all the people of the Middle East is the path to peace in the Middle East.
